I would like to upgrade the firmware on my father's 4400 PVR, however, before I set myself loose on that machine, I'm trying to get it right on a TF4000T that we aren't using at the moment.

I have bought myself a serial cable (of the null modem type). I have downloaded the TFD-Down program and the relevant f/w for the unit from the Topfield website. (The unit has System ID 543, and I have downloaded the f/w for this unit)

I plugged everything in, selected the serial port that the cable was on and ran the program, but nothing happens. TFD-Down shows the message saying to reset the unit, but I can't get past that.

The f/w upgrade instructions say to turn the unit off. I have tried this by switching to standby and by removing the plug from the wall, before switching it back on or plugging it back in again.

The only thing that looks odd to me, is that the f/w file location in TFD-Down doesn't use back slashes, but a capital "W" with a strike through. Although, there is a screen shot of this in the unit's instructions, so it's maybe normal.

Is there anything I should try or look at?

I eventually was able to update the firmware (both on the 4000 and my dad's 4400). It seems that I was having some configuration issues with my laptop that I was using. I tried the update with my work laptop and the process worked first go without any issues. Not sure what configuration differences there are between my own laptop and my work's laptop that would be causing the upgrade problem.
Anyway, the upgrade has been done, so hopefully it fixes the occasional missed timers that my dad was having.
