The first version of MakeInfo is now up and ready for use for those who want to try it.
It is at http://groups.google.com/group/jaffaman?hl=en which is somewhere I found I could host files for free. Download the zip you find there and extract it.
It needs the .net runtime 2.0 or later to run - if you don't have it, it is available from Microsoft as the ".net framework 2.0 redistributable". It will tell you if it needs this when you run the program. It should run on an 800x600 display or bigger. [EDIT - actually needs .Net 3.5 SP1 - see later in the thread]

To use, start the program, select a valid transport stream mpg file (mpg, ts, rec etc), and enter the required values. When you have all the values in, press the "write files" button and this will create the .info and .nav (as selected). The date and time boxes are used to create the magic numbers the .info needs, and end date is set based on start date plus duration, though all of these start and end times are cosmetic only anyway.
Essentially if you set the vidpid and the audpid to the right stream IDs (I default them to the output values of videoredo which I use for editing), the rest shouldn't matter - even duration is cosmetic only and won't affect playback. For me, I simply point to a transport stream format output from videoredo and hit write files and that is it - rename the .ts to .mpg and copy to 7x00. If you haven't been following the discussion in the .nav files thread, the vidpid and audpid are the Video Stream ID and Audio Stream ID of the .mpg file. Programs like VideoReDo, mpegstreamclip and others will give you these values. Mpegstreamclip reports them in decimal, and these are hex, so you need to use the windows calculator to convert from dec to hex. When you do, leave the 0x in front (which is the hex prefix for the toppy). Come to think of it, adding a hex/decimal option to the program is an idea....
If you want to edit the other parameters, you need to activate them first with the advanced edit check box, but I think unless you know what you are doing, best to leave them alone. You can see the .info being built in the yellow box as you edit values. Hope it works for you - I haven't done extensive testing yet, but so far has worked everytime for me.
Sorry about the image - that is the biggest the forum will allow. Post here if you have any comments, suggestions, issues etc.
Next is to look at automatic .rec conversion by reading the .rec header values in. It's been rather fun doing this - first time in years I've done programming, and the first time I've used Visual Basic .Net (which is the language I ended up with), but it came together quicker than I thought it would.

JaffaMan (2008-11-19) It needs the .net runtime 2.0 or later to run ....
If this is the same requirement as John's Toppy Explorer then when I put the 43.5KB MakeInfo.exe file in the same directory as John's application, at C:\Programs\ToppyPC I received a " MakeInfo has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message.

Thanks Robert. I'm very new to this - Naturally it runs fine at home. I've just tried the download from work and got the same problem - I tried this a few days ago with an early version and it was fine - I must have done something wrong or posted the wrong file. Sorry. I'll try and work it out and fix it, but for the moment, it looks broken.

| If you want some help let me know. I'm a developer... Be nice if Topfield would release some technical specs of the files.. You should chat to the Explorer developer and get this integrated That way whenver you go to upload a video file via FTP it can streamline the process of creating the other files...?

| Thanks for the offer. If I can't figure it I'll get back to you - I'm sure I've just grabbed the wrong output file - Visual Studio creates so much stuff I just need to get used to what it all is and what is needed. I have spoken with John re explorer - once mine is up and running properly and OK I'll touch base with him again and see what makes sense to do easily.

Runs fine for me - I put it in the same folder as my Explorer.exe and its ok. I think it may have something to do with default folder permissions, especially under Vista. Try putting the file in a folder under c:\users and see if you still get a problem.
Cheers, John

I think I've got it. New version available from same link http://groups.google.com/group/jaffaman?hl=en. I did two things apparently - the final version uses some features from .Net framework 3.5, so it needs that loaded, .net 2.0 is not good enough. The other was I drew some lines on the screen to cosmetically separate sections of the input - apparently these are part of the "Visual Basic PowerPack" and this requires a whole new install of stuff (which John and I have as we have VideoStudio installed - this is why it is working for him). I have now removed the offending lines and recompiled so this extra is not required.
The .exe should now run, but you need to have .Net framework 3.5 SP1 installed.
If you don't already have it, it is available from Microsoft as a direct full download at http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe) or as a stub which installs over the net from this page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en.
Alternatively, I have created a setup file (same location http://groups.google.com/group/jaffaman?hl=en). If you run it on a machine with internet access, it will apparently download what it needs and install itself on your start menu. I can't really test this as my main machine has always worked, and my test machine both now has the full .net 3.5 sp1 runtime on it, and is currently only connected by a very slow wireless link which was going to take days to install the framework via the setup file (which unfortunately is some 250 mb).
So if you try it and it works please let me know how you go. Sorry about forcing the large download on you - it seems a bit nuts to want 250mb installed to run a 40k application, but that's how it goes.
My apologies to Apple folk for a PC only app - as a long term Mac user myself I like to be cross platform, but the Microsoft tool was the best free tool I could find that I could work out how to use. Hopefully those of you with new macs are able to run windows anyway.

The 'new' 46.5KB MakeInfo.exe application runs OK.
I don't specifically remember downloading .Net framework 3.5 SP1 but I have installed SP3 in my Windows XP Pro installation so it could have been part of that.

Thanks Robert - good news. Yes, I think Microsoft makes every effort to get it out with service packs etc, so I suspect anyone who had a newish operating system or service pack probably has it by default.
